El Al delay compensation: claiming for London to Tel Aviv flights

El Al is an Israeli airline, so UK261 only covers its flights that depart from the UK – such as London Heathrow or Luton to Tel Aviv. Those flights are long enough to fall in the top band: up to £520 per person when you arrive four or more hours late.

    • El Al from London to Tel Aviv: covered by UK261.
    • About 3,590 km: £520 per person for 4+ hours late, £260 for 3–4 hours.
    • El Al from Tel Aviv to London: not covered by UK261 or EU261.
    • Israel's Aviation Services Law covers flights from or to Israel.

Which El Al flights are covered?

    • London to Tel Aviv on El Al: departs the UK, so UK261 applies.
    • An EU airport (for example Paris) to Tel Aviv on El Al: departs the EU, so EU261 applies.
    • Tel Aviv to London on El Al: an airline from outside the UK and EU flying into the UK, so neither UK261 nor EU261 applies.

Flights from or to Israel also fall under Israel's Aviation Services Law, which has its own rules on delays, cancellations and refunds. It is a separate law with different amounts and conditions, so check El Al's notice of passenger rights or ask us which applies to your flight.

How much compensation for an El Al flight from London?

London Heathrow to Tel Aviv is about 3,590 km on a great-circle route, just over the 3,500 km line. That puts it in the long-haul band:

    • Arrived 4 or more hours late: £520 per person
    • Arrived 3 to 4 hours late: £260 per person
    • Cancelled with less than 14 days' notice: up to £520 per person, depending on the replacement flight

Children with their own paid seat are each entitled; a baby travelling free on your lap is not.

Care while you wait at Heathrow or Luton

On a flight over 3,500 km, El Al must offer food and drink once you have been delayed four hours past departure, and a hotel with transport if the delay runs overnight. If you pay for these yourself because nothing was provided, keep itemised receipts to claim back. After a five-hour delay you can choose not to fly and get a refund.

How to claim from El Al

El Al handles refunds and claims through the online services section of its website. Compensation is not paid automatically – you need to ask for it, with your booking reference and ticket numbers.

El Al isn't on the CAA's list of airlines signed up to an approved ADR scheme (checked 2 November 2026). If it rejects your claim or doesn't give a final answer within eight weeks, you can take your complaint to the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT), or to court.

    Questions people ask

Can I claim compensation for a delayed El Al flight from Tel Aviv to London?

Not under UK261 or EU261, because El Al is not a UK or EU airline. Israel's Aviation Services Law may give you rights instead.

How much is El Al compensation from London?

London to Tel Aviv is just over 3,500 km, so it is £520 per person if you arrived four or more hours late, or £260 if three to four hours late – unless the cause was extraordinary circumstances.

Does a security alert count as extraordinary circumstances?

Genuine security risks and political unrest are extraordinary circumstances, so compensation would not be due for disruption they caused. The airline must still provide care, and a refund or new flight if your flight was cancelled.

    How much do you charge?

Checking your flight is free. If we win, our fee is 25% of the compensation, with no VAT. If you don't get paid, you pay nothing. If a claim has to go to a solicitor or court, the fee is 45%, and no court action starts without your OK.
