    Flight compensation: your questions answered

How much compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled flight?

Under UK261 it depends on the flight distance: £220 per person for flights under 1,500 km, £350 for 1,500–3,500 km, and £520 for flights over 3,500 km (such as London to New York). For flights covered by EU261 the amounts are €250, €400 and €600.

How late does my flight have to be?

You may be owed compensation if you reached your final destination more than three hours late. On flights over 3,500 km, a delay of three to four hours usually means half the amount (£260).

Can I claim if my flight was cancelled?

If the airline told you about the cancellation less than 14 days before departure, you may be able to claim compensation, depending on the replacement flight you were offered and what caused the cancellation.

    Which flights are covered?

UK261 covers flights departing from a UK airport on any airline, and flights arriving in the UK on a UK or EU airline. EU261 covers flights departing from the EU, and flights arriving in the EU on an EU airline.

When does the airline not have to pay?

Airlines do not have to pay compensation when the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances, such as extreme weather, air traffic control restrictions or strikes by airport or air traffic control staff. We check what caused your disruption before taking on your claim.

How far back can I claim?

For UK flights you can usually claim for flights up to 6 years ago in England and Wales (5 years in Scotland).

    How much do you charge?

Checking your flight is free. If we win, our fee is 25% of the compensation, with no VAT. If you don't get paid, you pay nothing. If a claim has to go to a solicitor or court, the fee is 45%, and no court action starts without your OK.
